The BRDC Stars of Tomorrow kart championship lived up to its name last Sunday (20 April) when Daniel visited the opening weekend of the Championship, and was treated like an A-list celebrity.
Daniel - who currently lies 5th in the Ginetta Junior Championship’s points table in his debut season of car racing – was at the PFi circuit in Lincolnshire, to represent the Ginetta series.
He says: “It was brilliant to go back and see a lot of friends that I hadn’t seen for a while. I couldn’t walk further than about two metres at a time, because I kept being stopped by people. Many were congratulating me on how well my season is going, so it was nice to hear that people are following my career.”
Daniel - and fellow Stars Old Boy, Nigel Moore - also took to the track, to demonstrate their cars and take the podium winners round for victory laps. Daniel again: “We were driving the Cadet and Junior Max winners round for the TV cameras, but had to do it slowly. We did ask Carolynn (Hoy) if we could do a hot lap, but there was a very short answer to that! It was weird driving round PF in a car rather than a kart - I never thought I’d be asked to do that before.”
Daniel reported that there had been a great deal of interest in the Ginetta series, with many drivers and their parents discussing how and when to make the switch from karts to cars.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Going back and helping the Championship was great. Anything I can give back (to Stars), I will.”
Dan’s now preparing for his next race at Donington Park on 3/4 May 2008.
