Daniel Lloyd continued his excellent progress at the wheel of his brand new ELF Renault Clio Cup race car during official winter testing at Rockingham on Friday, 7th November – the Scammonden youngster emerging second fastest once again, as he did at North Yorkshire’s Croft Circuit a week earlier.
In only his second ever outing alongside a group of fellow Clio Cup drivers, 16-year-old Daniel produced a best time of 1m 30.962 seconds (77.12mph) during the final session of the day at Rockingham’s International Super Sports Car Circuit.
Placing him just half a second shy of experienced Team Pyro stable-mate, and newly crowned 2008 ELF Renault Clio Winter Cup Champion, Aron Smith on overall times for the day, Daniel comfortably outpaced a number of established campaigners in his Propack and The Workplace backed 2.0-litre racer.
In session one, which took place in wet conditions, the West Yorkshire racer was fifth fastest before improving to fourth quickest during the second of the day’s test runs which started on a damp track but gradually dried towards the end. In the final outing of the day, he leapt to second fastest on his last lap.
“It was a good day really, to end up second fastest just half a second off Aron (Smith) wasn’t bad at all as he’s been using a lot of new tyres, as have some of the others, and we’ve just been getting more and more miles under our belt on older rubber”, explained Daniel as he reflected on his second ‘official’ test outing in a Clio.
“The first session was wet and in the second session we started with slick tyres on the front and wets still on the rear. Midway through we changed to full slicks but the last session was the best as it was properly dry. There’s still plenty more time to find in both me and the car but I’m pleased with how everything is going, it’s a great start.”
Unfortunately at the very end of the final session, after Daniel had completed his last quick lap, his car received contact from Ray MacDowall’s Clio after the saloon car veteran had a spin. Thankfully, the damage was limited to the front-right side on Daniel’s Clio but the repairs, of course, still eat into his budget.
